How old is the Sphinx?
The Sphinx, located on the Giza plateau, was thought to have been built
by the Chephren ( Khafre) approx. 2500 years before Christ.
New theories by Robert Bauval have
pushed the date back more than 7500 years to a time before the end of the
last Ice Age. But Egyptologists vehemently deny Bauvel assumptions,
saying "He knows nothing, show us the potsherds or the ruins. Bauval though
bases his theory on the weathering on the monument as compared to rainfall
record. The weathering is vertical indicating water erosion not horizontal,
as would show wind erosion. He also believes the head we see now on the
Sphinx was carved by Khafre to his likeness from the original head of a
lion. The head does shows less weathering than the the body. <
