| Our
first trip up the Tioga
was on the back of a BMW motorcycle during the month of July 1981.
When we crossed into Yosemite through the Tioga Pass we were met at the
gate by an old grizzled Forest Service Ranger. |
|
|
The
Ranger laughed at us on our bike, saying "You're
crazy! We just open the pass this morning!"
|
| It
is 9950' and there was 15' snow banks all around us but the
road was damp but passable, and the weather was foggy and cool. At this
altitude the cars just wheeze and sputter but the BMW 1000 excelled. We
didn't see any other motorcycles until we reached 4
Hondas parked by the 8400' sign.
Their owners were playing in the snow. |

| The
Tioga area of Yosemite is one of the few areas left where you can drive
an automobile through an expanse of real 'high
country'. Almost all of the rest of the
high country of california is only accessible by horse or backpack.
This high country is as pristine a wilderness area as is found in
California. |
|
|
| There
are numerous places to camp, and to park and backpack in
and camp. The fishing is intense in this area and so are the Park
Rangers. Be sure to purchase your fishing
license
before you go fishing. |
