View of the Sierras from just south of Mount Whitney. The roadway pictured is U.S. 395.
Red's Meadow is in the southern end of a fair sized valley that is the headwater of the San Jauquin River. Located in the valley is the Devil's Postpile National Monument.
Frank and Anna at the Devil's Postpile 1981
The Devil's Postpiles are fairly unique formation of lava. The sign at the Monument say it is the only one like it, but I have personally seen similar formations both in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest. The formations look like pipe organs.
Until the explosive volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington State no one realized the scope and scale of the tectonic activity in the Eastern Sierras. As I traveled throughout the area I noted a great many large volcanic cones that had suffered massive lateral blast eruptions. I don't think I would own property in this area.
Fly fishing is incredible in and around Red's Meadow.
Our next stop is the strange Mono Lake. But when we got there it was raining with no shelter in sight.
