View
of the Sierras from just south of Mount Whitney. The roadway pictured
is U.S. 395.

|
| Red's
Meadow is in the southern end of a fair
sized valley that is the headwater of the San Jauquin River.
Located in the valley is the Devil's Postpile
National Monument. |

|
| The
Devil's Postpiles are fairly
unique formation of lava. The sign
at the Monument say it is the only one like it, but I have personally seen
similar
formations both in the Hawaiian Islands
and the Pacific
Northwest. The formations look like
pipe organs. |

| Until
the explosive volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington
State no one realized the scope and scale of the tectonic activity in the
Eastern Sierras. As I traveled throughout the area I noted a great many
large volcanic cones
that had suffered massive lateral blast eruptions. I don't think I would
own property in this area. |

Fly
fishing is incredible
in and around Red's Meadow.
| Our
next stop is the strange Mono Lake. But when we got there it was
raining with no shelter in sight. |
