They picked us up at the hotel at 5:55 in the morning and drove us to their 'terminal', where they fed us coffee and do-nuts. We were the first departure at 7 AM. It was clear and bright.

They flew us over several islands on the trip to Hilo. The one to the left is Lanai. The island, though fairly large, is almost completely flat. Dole family owns the island and has graded the hills flat and planted Pineapples everywhere. About 20,000 workers, mostly Filipino, live in villages around the island.
This is the famous 'Black Sand' beach. The only thing near the beach is the Kalapana Gift Shop, which always has a eye open for the tourist dollar. The rest of the area is part of a nature park.
The Pu'ou'ou Vent was the only active vent while we were on the Island. A month before and six months after our visit, the volcano put on a spectacular show.
Well we missed it.

I was forced to take a picture of the big poster on the wall in the Hawaii Volcanos National Park Information Center. From here we go next to the area of devastation near the beach.

The flowers shown are pictures taken at the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens located in little town of Volcano Hawaii.
